Ranged units with Marksmanship passive are significantly better and more reliable at ranged and is very important to keep alive unless you play as Elves who have it easily.ĪoW:SM is definitely much less streamlined, so getting into it is much harder. Positioning ranged units in AoW is FAR more important due to how not only the range is factored in but height, obstacles and then the enemies defense stat. Making Magic buffs and passives really strong as well as debuffs due to the nature of the Attack stat and Defense stat heavily influencing the results. A units stats are far more important in AoW becuase of the lack of stacks and the rng. Unless you're really careful with your units they can easily get killed off at any point while in Heroes you can just get enough stacks to run over other units. However positioning in an actual battle is far more important due to the terrain and height actually being factors while Heroes have a very simple grid based Battlefield. Map reliance might be more important for Heroes though as magic can also be used to change terrain to benefit you in AoW and you can actually create your own cities on the map. Really disagree on that AoW: SM not relying on strategy. ![]() Although there are no special resources to speak of beside mana. The economy also differs since it's not formulaic on per weekly basis - you are mostly limited by production and gold which depends on how you expand your cities rather then capture on map resource production nodes. Probably the RNG hit chance is one of the main prominent differences between the two, or at least it seems like since it's the most annoying thing when I compare the two. And you can't sit on your ass and craft powerful items for your heroes and neither you can have pretty much all useful abilities in one hero per se, at least you have to specialize a little bit. Although HoMM 4 can do that as well at times, it's slightly less obvious since you can throw large stacks of units at them and there is less bullshit like missed strikes and even more obnoxiously RNG ranged combat. Although HoMM also has an upper limit to hero power progression and a decent progression system while AoW can go pretty crazy with 1-man army heroes. If you want to compare HoMM series then HoMM 4 would probably be closest to AoW SM since the heroes act as tactical pawns. IMO both are great but AoW is less about balance and more about roleplay \ immersion while HoMM 3 is more about utilizing strategy and the map effectively. HoMM also doesn't have new city building mechanic so map control and army power progression is more rigid. Plus there is an upper limit to units per army whereas HoMM 3 can stack up numbers hence stats per pawn on strategic map almost indefinitely so there is more emphasis on getting more units. So I'm asking to someone who has played both a decent amount of time to list the differences and similarities between them and share their personal opinion which one they like better and why?ĪoW is more RNG and has more emphasis on magic outside of combat such as summoning and enchantment. AoW:SM on the other hand felt a bit harder. The only x4 game that I actually had the brain capacity for and had fun in was Warlock Master of the Arcane where on my first game I actually won. I've tried a couple of times to get into AoW:SM, but on my first attempts I really had trouble learning how to play x4 games. I've played HoMM3 since 1999 when I was merely 7 years old and I still play it today. ![]() My question is not "Which is better?", but more "What are the differences between both aside from the fact that one is x4 and the other one isn't?", I don't have an intention for this thread to turn into "My favorite pixels are better than your favorite pixels." I know one game is x4 and the other ones is TBS or Grand Strategy (not sure about the accurate terms so I may be completely wrong), but looking at them through the perspective of a complete noob, they look very similar.
